Nothingness / by Nathalie Chikhi

Over the past weeks, I have been thinking about my project installation with the Maitland Art Center, here in Florida.

After 2 days of installation, using 550 yards of pink rexlace and pointed tacks, the work was completed. This installation has 2 different status, one by day and the other one at night. The thread are glowing in the dark by being in contact of a blacklight.

My project was first some thoughts in my head & some digital sketches via Adobe illustrator/photoshop.

WORK STATEMENT
To the term Nothingness, I will associate the words void and emptiness. The space, a PODS container, will be filled with a structured layering of plastic lace coming together from a focal point. At night, the thin threads will emit a subtle greenish glow. It will become more distinctive to the viewer if he/she stays long enough to intercept the glowing effect. By day, the installation will be a monochromatic pink.

This installation relates to the theme Sanctuary*, in a spiritual way. This 3 dimensional halo suggests an immaterial presence, a tunnel in afterlife or some form of energy. This theme was given to the invited artists for the 31 days event organized by the Maitland Art Center.

The curator of the exhibition is Rebecca Sexton-Larson, also an artist with a focus on photography.
